Data Formats

Raster Data

Raster image data is converted into our custom file format which is tiled and indexed for efficient storage and retrieval. Multiple images are mosaiced together into this format to form a seamless image of the entire metropolitan area.

The .MAP file maintains all information necessary for image display including layer data and layer view ranges. This method of viewing allows PhotoMapper to display the most reasonable resolution for the current viewscale.

When viewing data covering very large areas, the raster data can be stored in a compressed format. Compression ratios of up to 20:1 can be achieved, however, a small time penalty is paid at display time due to decompression of the image data prior to display.

Vector Data

Vector data in AutoCAD .DXF format can be imported over the top of the raster data. All vector data is placed on layers corresponding to the AutoCAD layername. Since PhotoMapper layers have a view range associated with layers, one can selectively display different features based on the current view scale. All text is converted to windows True Type fonts.

Blocks and several of the high-level AutoCAD entities are not currently supported.

Attributed Data

Attribute data is imported into PhotoMapper using MapInfo's MIF format. Data is displayed but can not be edited.
